Kuda Karnalika

  • State neglect leaves the Surkhet-Jumla section of the Karnali Highway in dire condition. The 232-km stretch was last blacktopped in 2012, and annual repairs have been consistently shoddy.
  • Recent data shows that the public schools in Karnali have less attraction of students as popularity decreased by 4 percent in the last two fiscal years. Quality of education has been considered one of the major reasons.
  • Birendranagar Municipality, the capital city of Karnali Province, announced its budget of about 3 billion rupees for the fiscal year 2023/24 on June 25. The budget consists of 42 percent capital expenditure, 57 percent recurrent expenditure, and 1 percent financial management costs.   Likewise, most local levels in Karnali province announced their budget on June 25.
  • Out of 79, thirty local levels of Karnali province have reported Ministry of Federal Affairs and General Administration about their annual budget by June 27. Every local level has compliance to submit their approved expected income and expenditure by the 25th of June.

Parliament watch

  • Karnali provincial government has announced its budget of about 33 billion for the fiscal year 2023/24. Minister for Economic Affairs and Planning, Hon. Bedraj Singh, presented the budget to the provincial assembly on June 16.

What we are doing

  • Hriti Foundation has been conducting research on the budgetary process of the Karnali province government. The research focuses on peoples’ participation in building the budget and executing the budget. Moreover, Hriti Foundation has also been researching the challenges of sub-national governments in Karnali.
