Let’s Speak : Electricity Problem in Karnali (EP 52)

The problem of irregular electricity supply is one of the major problems of Karnali province. Surkhet, Dailekh, Jajarkot, Jumla, and other districts are affected by power cuts and many local levels of the province are without electricity. Kalikot, Jumla, Mugu, Dolpa, and Humla districts are not connected to the national transmission line. Only 77,000 households in the province have consumed electricity from the national transmission line. While some places have constructed micro hydropower locally, but electricity remains a big problem.

Against this problem, Hriti Foundation has planned to conduct a discussion program on alternatives solutions to the problem of electricity in Karnali and how to attract the private sector in small and large-scale hydropower. This discussion will also touch upon  the impact of power cuts on people’s everyday lives and the establishment and operation of industries. Are power cuts hindering the people of Karnali from getting more economic opportunities? The discussion will attempt to find an answer.
